FATV: 2011 World Cup

In June 2011 I was asked by FATV to be the FA’s official videographer for the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany. Together with their reporter, I was embedded with Hope Powell’s squad throughout the finals campaign from the squad announcement in London, training camp in Leicester and the tournament itself in Germany. I shot (EX3 and 7D), edited and uploaded daily content from the camp including player personality profiles, training footage, interviews and edits of player video diaries.

These were distributed on FATV/YouTube and several clips were used by the BBC to supplement their tournament coverage.

Upon our return I put together an overview edit of the team’s story:

The work aside, the experience was something I was privileged to be part of. Having worked with professional football for over 10 years I’m very familiar with how the industry works, but spending an extended period of time with a working squad gave me a new insight and understanding of what players go through at a major tournament. I also came away with a huge respect for women’s football and particularly for the commitment and professionalism of Hope Powell’s players and staff, and if things had gone our way in the penalty shootout I think we could have seen them going all the way.

GoalMouth

In spring 2011 I series produced and helped shoot ‘GoalMouth’, a 5×21 minute football magazine show for Disney XD presented by Tim Warwood and Adam Gendle.

Disney’s brief was to create a fun show for boys 8-12 which not only featured Premier League names but also helped promote the Premier League Schools Tournament.  I was asked by Sassy Films to assist with the initial pitch and development of the format, and then to write/produce the show which was a combination of archive footage, pre-recorded location packages with Premier League footballers

plus action from the schools tournament and studio gags/links.

Operating with a skeleton team, I was required to take on multiple tasks including writing the script, shooting inserts, researching archive footage and booking Premier League contributors.

Yazoo: LAFTAs

LAFTAS with Yazoo

In early 2011 I shot and edited a series of videos for Yazoo from the media run at the Loaded LAFTAS which they co-sponsored.  Starring Soccer AM/Channelbee’s own Robbie Knox and a smattering of the nation’s best loved comic performers including the likes of Jimmy Carr, David Baddiel, Keith Lemon and Vic Reeves

the videos deal with the weighty issues of favourite comedy films, funniest words and in Keith Lemon’s case all manner of strangeness.

Blog about the shoot is here and here’s one of the videos:

England 2018

In late August 2010 I was asked to join the England 2018 bid team as their pool video cameraman and editor, tasked with filming (Sony EX1), editing and distributing B-roll footage of the FIFA Inspection Team’s visit to London, the North East and Manchester.  I covered Nick Clegg’s statement at 10 Downing Street, tours of Wembley Stadium, Rockliffe Hall, Stadium of Light, St James’ Park, City of Manchester Stadium and Old Trafford

Sir Bobby Charlton, Wayne Rooney and Danny Jordaan at Old Trafford

and the closing statements and press conference from Manchester Central.  Footage was edited, encoded and uploaded to the distribution platform within hours of being shot, including an edit which was completed on the team helicopter between Newcastle and Manchester.

At the end of the week I produced a montage of the visit which was used by FATV and England 2018 as well as distributed to the clubs involved and international broadcasters:

I also blogged about the week on this site; it was certainly one of the more memorable and taxing jobs I’ve done so far.

Later in the year I was sent by the team to Trinidad to cover The David Beckham Academy running a workshop for coaching staff and a tournament for local schoolchildren.  I produced B-roll for worldwide media use and a quick edit of an interview with David Beckham which was picked up by many outlets:

Mitre: Schwarzer

Mitre logo

Prior to the World Cup I shot and edited a series of mini-interviews for Mitre, showcasing Mark Schwarzer as their ambassador.  The fella on the right with the nose is Fenners, ex-Soccer AM, Channelbee, ESPN and Football Focus type, now back at Sky Sports on Soccer Saturday and hosting his own show, ‘Take It Like A Fan’.  The interviews covered a range of subjects surrounding the World Cup and his experiences in football.

Before the World Cup I was brought in by 888sport.com to direct, shoot and edit a series of branded videos featuring ex-footballers Matt Le Tissier and Mark Crossley on the subject of the ‘perfect penalty.’  Sadly England didn’t really get far enough to warrant worrying about the results (as processed by Liverpool John Moores University)!

Hyper Island

Hyper Island

Hyper Island might well have just changed my life.  They’ve certainly changed the way I think and the way I’ll work from now on.  They are a Swedish digital training institution, but that’s not the half of it.  More on them anon.
